Located in Medellin, Colombia MÂKUA works with talented artisans from indigenous communities’, combining their ancestral artisanal techniques with contemporary jewellery techniques. To date, the brand has launched collections with indigenous women of the KUNA ethnicity in northern Colombia, who work with molas (textiles made through ancestral reverse appliqué techniques), and with EM-BERA CHAMI indigenous women, located on the pacific coast, who work with crystal beads embroi-dery. Each artisanal piece made by these communities has an ancestral legacy, and a special meaning related to their cosmogony and traditional beliefs.
The brand mixes ancestral techniques from indigenous communities with goldsmith work mostly in gold-plated bronze. Both components are handmade individually to create unique pieces. The aim is to give the pieces a contemporary appeal even though they are made with ancestral techniques, the objective is to make the pieces look modern and contemporary.
